I installed MetaMask and am creating my first wallet

  1. If no wallet has been created by or connected to MetaMask, you will first be asked to set a password. This will be a strong password for accessing your MetaMask client from here on out.

  2. You will be given the Secret Recovery Phrase for your MetaMask client. Click to reveal this Secret Recovery Phrase, and store it somewhere safe.

Note: Your Secret Recovery Phrase grants you access to your MetaMask client, which in turn grants access to all the wallets you have connected to your MetaMask client. If you lose your MetaMask password, this recovery phrase will allow you to regain access to your MetaMask and the funds of the wallets connected to it. As such, anyone with access to this Secret Recovery Phrase will be able to access your wallets.

  3. On the next page, you will be prompted to enter your Secret Recovery Phrase. This is to confirm you know and have access to this phrase.

  4. All done! Your wallet has been created.

This is not the first wallet I’m creating

  1. Click the profile icon in the upper-right to expand the options, and then click “Create account”.

  2. Enter a name for the account. If no name is provided, the account name will default to “Account 2”.

  3. All done! Your wallet has been created.

I own a wallet that’s not tied to MetaMask, and I want to connect it to MetaMask

If you already have a self-custody wallet (whether hardware or not), you can connect it to MetaMask in order to use the MetaMask interface for interacting with your wallet and blockchain.

Since these wallet accounts were not created via MetaMask, they will not be recoverable with MetaMask’s Secret Recovery Phrase.

For connecting a self-custody wallet that you own to MetaMask, see these instructions below from MetaMask’s official documentation:

For connecting a hardware wallet to MetaMask, see this Hardware Wallet Hub for how to do so for your particular hardware wallet:
